March 24 commemorates with …… • It commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch's discovery opened the way towards diagnosing and curing TB.

History of world tb day • In 1982, on the one-hundredth anniversary of Robert Koch's presentation, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) proposed that March 24 be proclaimed an official World TB Day. This was part of a year-long centennial effort by the IUATLD and the World Health Organization (WHO) under the theme “Defeat TB: Now and Forever.

World TB Day 2015 to Create Global Awareness • This World TB Day 2015 will signal a renewed effort to alert Ministers of Health to the global, regional and national TB emergency, emphasizing the unacceptable situation that many cases of TB go undiagnosed, untreated or are not cured. It is a chance to engage with National TB Programme Managers and other stakeholders to improve the quality of existing programmes and the access to care and services.

6. World TB Day Creates Public Awareness • World TB Day, falling on March 24th each year, is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year, mostly in developing countries
VISION, GOALS AND TARGETS VISION: TB-Free India with zero deaths, disease and poverty due to tuberculosis. GOAL: To achieve a rapid decline in burden of TB, morbidity and mortality while working towards elimination of TB in India by 2025.       D E T E C T all DS-TB and DR-TB cases with an emphasis on reaching TB patients seeking care from private providers and undiagnosed TB in high-risk populations. T R E A T patients on appropriate anti-TB treatment wherever they seek care, with patient friendly systems and social support. P R E V E N T the emergence of TB in susceptible populations. B U I L D and strengthen enabling policies, empowered institutions and human resources with enhanced capacities.
